  4.     At first the growing generic drug-industry scandal was limited
  5. to a few unscrupulous newcomers. But last week the Government's
  6. probe of substandard generics struck an industry leader, Bolar
  7. Pharmaceutical of Copiague, N.Y. The Food and Drug Administration
  8. said that it intends to withdraw its approval of Bolar's generic
  9. version of Dyazide, the top-selling brand-name hypertension drug.
  10. Reason: the FDA says it can no longer be sure that the generic is
  11. biologically equivalent to its brand-name counterpart. After
  12. reviewing Bolar's records, the FDA found that the company had
  13. submitted two batches of its drug for approval in 1987. Only one
  14. passed the equivalency test, but it is unclear which version
  15. reached the market. Bolar claims that only the effective generic
  16. is in drugstores.
